Beauty in Chaos, Wayne Hussey y Simon Gallup: Man of Faith

Beauty in Chaos, el ensamble que Michael Ciravolo ha ensamblado con gente de la talla de Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), Al Jourgensen (Ministry), Pete Parada (The Offspring), dUg Pinnick (Kings X), ICE-T (Body Count), Michael Aston (Gene Loves Jezebel), Michael Anthony (Van Halen), Dirk Doucette (Gene Loves Jezebel), Ashton Nyte (The Awakening), Pando (A Flock of Seagulls), Evi Vine (Evi Vine), Betsy Martin (Caterwaul / Purr Machine), Marc Danzeisen (The Riverdogs), Kevin Kipnis (Purr Machine / Kommunity FK), Rudy Matchinga (Red Scare), Johnny Indovina (Human Drama), y Tish Ciravolo (Stun Gun), está a un par de días de revelar su Finding Beauty In Chaos, por lo que tras presentar Storm, su primer sencillo junto el videoclip promocional que le corresponde, ahora nos adelantan un segundo tema en el que colaboran unos individuos llamados Wayne Hussey y Simon Gallup.

Man of Faith es la declaratoria de identidad de aquella persona que, sin importar la religión o credo que profese, finalmente se ha encontrado a sí misma, de manera tal que es capaz de seguir su propio camino, sin importar que este sea una simple vereda, exija abrir brecha o sortear inexplicables obstáculos, liderando mediante el ejemplo y liberando el uso de la razón particular y voluntaria.

When I joined The Cure back when things were black and white I made a secret vow to myself that I wouldn’t just haw myself out …I believed that when you are in a band you stick by that band, and don’t become just a journeyman Muso to further your own ego …I serioiusly hated all those tits from the 80,s and 90,s who used to pat each other on the back and «hang out». To me, commitment to one band was a signal fire that you meant it.. but …Then you mellow!

I was lucky enough to meet Michael and his lovely wife Tish and Mark in the 90’s and I think my first comment to him was rather flippant, but I was very used to people from companies coming backstage and asking us to stand in the Broom Cupboard while they held court with Robert. So here I was for the first time, where a genuinely nice bunch of people were asking me about things like missing home, how I felt how the tour had been going, etc. ( I sort of had to look over my shoulder that they weren’t talking to Robert). It just felt like a normal conversation down the pub with people I knew).

Michael has always been 100% behind getting what the band wanted in regards to guitar designs ,colours shapes, and one of my joys in touring America was always his enthusiasm about guitars and guitarists ! (Michael +Tish + beer + bar ++ Me slightly slumped talking about Johnny Thunders if you get the idea).

So back to where I started… if someone else had asked me to play, I would have probably have said no but I felt this was a special thing, and then the icing on the cake was that Wayne was singing! I could sit here and type for hours to explain what Wayne means to me, but suffice to say, I think he is one of the most underrated rock singers of all time.

Cuando me uní a The Cure, cuando las cosas eran en blanco y negro, me hice una promesa secreta de que no me lanzaría en solitario … Creí que cuando estás en una banda te quedas con esa banda, y no lo haces para ser solo un Muso pasajero para promover tu propio ego … En serio odiaba todas esas tetas de los 80 y 90, que solían darse palmadas en la espalda y «pasar el rato». Para mí, el compromiso con una banda fue una marca de fuego que significa compromiso … pero … ¡entonces te calmas!

Tuve la suerte de conocer a Michael y su encantadora esposa Tish y Mark en la década de los 90 y creo que mi primer comentario fue bastante frívolo, pero estaba acostumbrado a que las personas de las empresas vinieran al backstage y pidieran que nos quedáramos en el cuarto de las escobas mientras cortejaban a Robert. Así que aquí estaba, por primera vez, donde un grupo realmente agradable de personas me preguntaba por cosas como estar fuera de casa, cómo me sentía cómo había ido la gira, etc. (tuve que mirar por encima del hombro para asegurarme de que no se dirigían a Robert). Simplemente se sentía como una conversación normal en el pub con personas que conocía.

Michael siempre ha estado 100% pendiente con respecto a obtener lo que la banda quería en cuanto a diseños de guitarra, formas de colores y, una de mis alegrías al recorrer América ¡Siempre fue su entusiasmo por las guitarras y los guitarristas! (Michael + Tish + cerveza + bar ++ Yo ligeramente bajoneado hablando de Johnny Thunders si entiendes la idea).

Volviendo al punto de partida … si alguien más me hubiera pedido que tocara, probablemente hubiera dicho que no, pero sentí que era algo especial, ¡y luego la cereza del pastel fue que Wayne canta! Podría sentarme aquí y escribir durante horas para explicar lo que Wayne significa para mí, pero basta con decir que creo que es uno de los cantantes de rock más subestimados de todos los tiempos.

It was during The Mission’s US tour of 2013 when we played in LA at the Nokia Centre that I actually met Michael and Tish. Fabulously lovely people, I immediately felt very at home in their company. Like long lost friends I hadn’t seen in years. Michael and I kept in touch and then in July 2016, whilst I was in Austin, Texas, to mix the Mission album, Another Fall From Grace, with my old cohort, Tim Palmer, Michael flew out from LA to see me. And we spent a couple of days hanging out, eating Mexican, and staying up late drinking and playing music too loud in a hotel room. Michael mentioned that he was thinking of making a solo album and I said he should and offered to sing on a song or two – if he wanted, of course. Fast forward less than a year and Michael had sent me two backing tracks that he’d recorded that he thought would suit my voice.

I was thoroughly creatively burnt out by the Mission album so was thinking I would struggle writing lyrics for Michael’s tunes. Not so. When I heard the two tracks they both immediately suggested vocal ideas and the lyrics came surprisingly quickly and easily. That’s all it needed to get the creative juices flowing again – a couple of top tunes. And they are. And it’s been a privilege working with Michael, and the other Michael, and Tish. And to cap it all, Michael persuaded our mutual friend, Simon Gallup, my 2nd ever favourite bass player, to play bass on Man Of Faith. Simon and I had been threatening to make music together for years and, and like most good ideas born out of a shared bottle or three, just one of those things we hadn’t yet gotten around to doing. It’s taken Michael to make it happen. And who’s not to say there won’t be more music by the three of us in the future. I hope so, time and schedules permitting.

Fue durante la gira estadounidense de The Mission en 2013 cuando tocamos en LA en el Nokia Center que conocí a Michael y Tish. Gente fabulosamente encantadora, inmediatamente me sentí muy a gusto en su compañía. Como amigos perdidos hace mucho tiempo que no había visto en años. Michael y yo nos mantuvimos en contacto y luego, en julio de 2016, mientras estaba en Austin, Texas, para mezclar el álbum de Mission, Another Fall From Grace, con mi viejo colaborador, Tim Palmer, Michael voló desde LA para verme. Adelanta rápido a menos de un año y Michael me había enviado dos pistas de acompañamiento que había grabado y pensó que se adaptarían a mi voz.

Fui completamente destruido de forma creativa por el álbum de the Mission, así que pensé que me costaría escribir letras para las melodías de Michael. No tanto. Cuando escuché las dos pistas, ambas inmediatamente sugirieron ideas vocales y la letra llegó sorprendentemente rápida y fácilmente. Eso es todo lo que se necesita para que los jugos creativos fluyan de nuevo: un par de canciones principales. Y están. Y ha sido un privilegio trabajar con Michael y el otro Michael y Tish. Y para colmo, Michael persuadió a nuestro amigo mutuo, Simon Gallup, mi segundo bajista favorito, para tocar el bajo en Man Of Faith. Simon y yo habíamos estado amenazando con hacer música juntos durante años y, como la mayoría de las buenas ideas nacidas de una o tres botellas compartidas, solo era una de esas cosas que aún no habíamos hecho. Michael se ha tomado la molestia de hacerlo realidad. Y quién dice que no habrá más música para nosotros tres en el futuro. Espero que sí, que el tiempo y las agendas lo permitan.

Wayne Hussey
