Sun Atoms es una banda oriunda de Portland, dedicada al alternative pop y al postmodern rock, integrada por Jsun Atoms (The Upsidedown, Daydream Machine), Holmström, June Kang, Mars de Ponte (LoveBomb Go-Go), Eric Rubalcava, y Derek Spencer Longoria-Gomez (Hi Hazel), quienes en 2021 presentaran su álbum debut, Let There Be Light, llegando a nuestra audiencia con su nuevo sencillo, editado por Little Cloud Records en formatos digital y vinyl de 7″, ya disponible en plataformas como Apple Music, Spotify y Bandcamp, como anticipo a la salida de su siguiente disco antes de terminar la primavera, acompañando éste anticipo con un vídeo donde los personajes cobran vida de entre las cartas del tarot, en una realización de Brady Tuazon.

Ceiling Tiles es la capa que cubre la negación ante la realidad, especialmente cuando somos evidentes víctimas de nuestras propias acciones sin querer aceptarlo, por lo que siempre será más sencillo colocar un decorado a modo mientras permanecemos inamovibles en espera de que alguien limpie nuestro desastre.

When I was a child, I saw a being made of light climb through my bedroom window, they stood at the foot of my bed and reached out to touch my foot. Mesmerizing and haunting, much like the new Sun Atoms single ‘Ceiling Tiles’, which reveals a story of characters living under a faux sky being manipulated to make it appear that the stars are aligning, when in fact, above this tiled Truman Show, the stars are doing just that. The characters in the song go about their day-to-day dance while the globe they are spinning on becomes an eye.

Cuando era niño, vi entidades de luz subir por la ventana de mi habitación, se pararon a los pies de mi cama y extendieron la mano para tocar mi pie. Fascinante e inquietante, muy parecido al nuevo sencillo de Sun Atoms, ‘Ceiling Tiles’, que revela una historia de personajes que viven bajo un cielo falso y que son manipulados para que parezca que las estrellas se están alineando, cuando en realidad, encima de este Truman Show en mosaico, las estrellas están haciendo precisamente eso. Los personajes de la canción realizan su baile cotidiano mientras el globo sobre el que giran se convierte en un ojo.

I wanted to conjure the same feelings I had the first time I saw Sun Atoms perform this song. Jsun and I were in lockstep as we discussed the vision for the video. We pulled in inspiration from Jean Cocteau and other noir films like “The Killing” by Kubrick.

Working within the boundaries of black and white let us emphasize the theme of two worlds in a psychedelic noir manner. Portraying each member as their normal selves and as a ghost version adds another layer to the duality. It makes us ask the questions, “If our own ghosts saw us today, would they be kind and encouraging to us? Or would they be spirits signaling their existence as a cautionary tale? Filming the video was a true testament of the grit and creative solidarity at the core of Portland creatives. We had limited time and resources to pull this off.

Quería evocar los mismos sentimientos que tuve la primera vez que vi a Sun Atoms interpretar esta canción. Jsun y yo estábamos conectados mientras discutíamos la visión del video. Nos inspiramos en Jean Cocteau y otras películas negras como “The Killing” de Kubrick.

Trabajando dentro de los límites del blanco y negro, enfaticemos el tema de dos mundos de una manera psicodélica noir. Retratar a cada miembro como si fuera normal y como una versión fantasma agrega otra capa a la dualidad. Nos hace preguntarnos: “Si nuestros propios fantasmas nos vieran hoy, ¿serían amables y alentadores con nosotros? ¿O serían espíritus que señalarían su existencia como una advertencia? Filmar el video fue un verdadero testimonio del valor y la solidaridad creativa en el núcleo de los creativos de Portland. Teníamos tiempo y recursos limitados para lograrlo.
