6TH CROWD es el nombre artístico con el que Dari Maksymova se presentaba al mundo en el caótico 2020, y con canciones como You’re Not An Island, The Day is Over y Самозванцы (Samozvantsiy), promovió su disco debut, Avoid The Void EP, más con el No Man Is An Island (Beatastic Remix) nos mostró el verdadero poder de la música y el arte, al reencontrarnos con nuestro viejo conocido, Nico Beatastic, lanzando posteriormente y por su cuenta el What Happened EP y los sencillos 1312 y Не вивожу (Ne Vyvozhu), más en éste no menos complicado 2022, mientras preparaba su siguiente disco, Step, palabra ucraniana para Estepa, la invasión rusa a territorio ucraniano le impele a lanzar el primer extracto de éste material, a la venta en Bandcamp y Apple Music, destinando todas las regalías a la organización humanitaria Vostok SOS, cuyo trabajo está encaminado en ayudar a la población civil de Ucrania para evacuar las zonas de riesgo, proveyendo recursos básicos y ayuda psicológica.

Соколонько (sokolonko) es la riqueza que obtiene aquél que siembra con miras a sustentar su modo de vida y la de los suyos, de forma pacífica, pues si bien en apariencia deberá desprenderse de la mayor parte, lo cierto es que los frutos de la cosecha serán un beneficio mayor a lo que nuestros ojos podrán atestiguar.

This is a Ukrainian song from Donbas, my dear home region, which Russia is tearing apart right now. I didn’t know if I’d have a chance to do it later. In my research, as I learned more about folk Ukrainian music, I noticed that modern culture has plenty of references to music from western and central parts of my country, but nothing from the east. Nothing from my home. Culturally it simply didn’t exist. So I decided I wanted to change that balance and bring songs from East Ukraine back to life, to remind myself and everyone that Donbas is a historical part of Ukraine, no matter how badly Putin wants to destroy it.
Esta es una canción ucraniana de Donbas, mi querida región natal, que Rusia está destrozando en este momento. No sabía si tendría la oportunidad de hacerlo después. En mi investigación, a medida que aprendí más sobre la música folclórica ucraniana, noté que la cultura moderna tiene muchas referencias a la música del oeste y el centro de mi país, pero nada del este. Nada de mi hogar. Culturalmente, simplemente no existía. If people don’t remember their own history, someone can rewrite it for them. And then come with guns to “defend” Russian people in Ukraine, Moldova, or Serbia.
Si las personas no recuerdan su propia historia, alguien puede reescribirla. Y luego vienen con armas para “defender” al pueblo ruso en Ucrania, Moldavia o Serbia.

Over a week ago, Russia invaded Ukraine, shelling cities and killing hundreds of civilians. The Russian president calls it a “special operation” for “saving Russian-speaking people.” A more accurate term for it is “war”. And even more accurately is the intention behind this war: Russification, and Russification is cultural genocide. It’s clear that the ancient Greeks don’t exist, but we know of them because their cultural artifacts have been preserved. In the absence of their books, literature and artwork, we wouldn’t otherwise know anything about them as a people. Their history would simply cease to exist. That’s the goal of Russification – to remove all of the distinct and unique ethnic histories and merge them into one.
Hace más de una semana, Rusia invadió Ucrania, bombardeó ciudades y mató a cientos de civiles. El presidente ruso lo llama una “operación especial” para “salvar a las personas de habla rusa”. Un término más preciso para ello es «guerra». Y aún más precisamente es la intención detrás de esta guerra: la rusificación, y la rusificación es un genocidio cultural. Está claro que los antiguos griegos no existen, pero sabemos de ellos porque sus artefactos culturales se han conservado. En ausencia de sus libros, literatura y obras de arte, de otro modo no sabríamos nada sobre ellos como pueblo. Su historia simplemente dejaría de existir. Ese es el objetivo de la rusificación: eliminar todas las historias étnicas distintas y únicas para fusionarlas en una sola.

When Communists gathered different nations under the umbrella of the USSR, they desperately needed to rewrite history. They needed everyone to share the same bland fake ethnicity, they needed people to forget their roots. So people would never get second thoughts about belonging to ‘the great empire”, never question orders and the party line. While, in newly-built cities, their Russification program was going pretty well, people in villages continued to be a real pain in the ass. They lived and worked far from centralized sources of information and relied on the government very little… and didn’t rush to become Soviet people. Yes, they lived in the Soviet Union and yes, they worked in Soviet fields, but one thing they did that drove the Russians crazy: the villagers spoke Ukrainian and sang their own songs.
Cuando los comunistas reunieron a diferentes naciones bajo el paraguas de la URSS, necesitaban desesperadamente reescribir la historia. Necesitaban que todos compartieran la misma etnicidad falsa y anodina, necesitaban que la gente olvidara sus raíces. Para que la gente nunca tuviera dudas sobre pertenecer al «gran imperio», nunca cuestionara las órdenes y la línea del partido. Mientras que, en las ciudades recién construidas, su programa de rusificación iba bastante bien, la gente de los pueblos seguía siendo un verdadero dolor de cabeza. Vivían y trabajaban lejos de las fuentes centralizadas de información y dependían muy poco del gobierno… y no se apresuraron a convertirse en personas soviéticas. Sí, vivían en la Unión Soviética y sí, trabajaban en los campos soviéticos, pero hacían algo que volvía locos a los rusos: los aldeanos hablaban ucraniano y cantaban sus propias canciones.

Before people had Spotify, they sang to themselves – while working in fields, while fighting, getting married… they sang all the time. Those songs passed from one to another, along with very important information about people. What language they spoke, what they believed, what they hoped, who their heroes were. Songs from people are also songs about people.
Antes de que la gente tuviera Spotify, cantaban para sí mismos: mientras trabajaban en el campo, mientras peleaban, se casaban… cantaban todo el tiempo. Esas canciones pasaban de uno a otro, junto con información muy importante sobre su pueblo. Qué idioma hablaban, qué creían, qué esperaban, quiénes eran sus héroes. La canción popular también son canciones sobre el pueblo.
